Introduction

Neighbours play a pivotal role in our lives because they are the ones we meet regularly apart from our family. And there is no denying this conviction that we become the average of five people we meet.

Although I have a big neighbourhood with numerous occupants, one of them is an exciting person. His name is Dr Gordon.

How long have you known this neighbour?

Five years back, he shifted to our neighbourhood. He met first time at a society function. Since that day, he has been my friend and mentor.

What sort of person is he?

He is a voracious reader and a learned man. He is a philanthropist who always goes beyond the conventional domain to solve the pressing problems of society.

How often do you see him?

It is rightly said that we become the average of five people we meet regularly. Mr Gordan has tremendous knowledge and ideas. Due to this reason, I go for a walk every morning with him.

And explain what kind of relationship you have with him OR explain why you consider this person an attractive neighbour?

Our relationship is of a teacher and student. Whenever I go through challenging times, I consult him to find a solution.

I consider him an interesting person because of his selfless nature. He has this practice of donating half of his earnings for the welfare of poor people.

He does not give money to poor people. Instead, he creates earning opportunities for them. For example, last month, he donated a water pump to the guy who washers cars in our neighbourhood.

His central focus in life is to eliminate poverty from the world.

Due to his immense qualities beyond the conventional domain, I call him an attractive neighbour.

How long have you known this neighbour?

We met first time at a society function five years back. Since that time, we have had a friendly relationship.

What sort of person is she?

She is a versatile person with a boatload of energy. She is a fitness consultant who has taken the responsibility of improving the physical and mental fitness of people around her.

How often do you see her?

Being a fitness freak, I meet her daily to improve my health and well-being. Every day we do some different exercises.

She is an interesting neighbour because of many reasons. First and foremost she doesn’t charge for her services from the neighbours. In this contemporary epoch, inflation has become an integral part of our lives, in such a scenario, people have this attitude of strengthening their bottom line, and they leave no stone unturned to make money.

However, Dr Rimple Sharma has a different mindset. In her opinion, her bounden duty is to provide unabated support to her neighbours. That is why she goes beyond the conventional domain to provide unstinted help to people suffering from obesity and other ailments.

As per her, a healthy society is worth living one.

Apart from this, another thing that makes her interesting, is the immense energy she possesses. Whether it is early morning or late night, she always remains charged.

In our lives, we come across countless people, and some of them are interesting. I have had the fortune to come across an interesting neighbour.

How long you have known this neighbour?

I have known him since my childhood. We are next-door neighbours.

What sort of person is he?

He is an altruist and tends to leave no stone unturned to improve the lives of others. He works selflessly for the welfare of others without any vested interests.

How often do you see him?

I take him as my mentor, and due to his unabated support, I always handle my conflicts adroitly.

To exemplify, he possesses a boatload of knowledge and encourages the neighbourhood kids to read books. To his dismay, the children show little interest.

To solve this issue, he summarises one book and narrates it to the children adroitly. While explaining, he cracks jokes which produce guffaws of laughter.

Under his aegis, the children of my neighbourhood have gone through a paradigm shift, and his teachings would lead them towards an impressive growth trajectory.

If we feel alone and need someone who can interact with us, then the best option we have is neighbours because they are just a few steps away. Indian people are social by nature. According to them, interacting with neighbours is an emotionally enriching experience. Moreover, joint family culture is still prevalent in India, and due to that, regular visits of neighbours and other family members are still in trend.

Q4. What are some of the qualities of a good community?

A good community thrives on the good qualities of its inhabitants. First of all, people should keep the environment neat and clean by not throwing garbage here and there. Secondly, they must refrain from playing loud music.

Thirdly they must respect the elders and provide moral values to the children. Apart from this, the community members should collaborate to solve their pressing problems. Lastly, they must organize events to bridge the gap between them.

Q5. In India, are there any facilities for improving relations between neighbours?

Yes, various NGOs act as mediators to resolve the conflicts adroitly between neighbours. Apart from this, in urban areas, the residents’ welfare association takes the lead in resolving problems between neighbours.

Q6.What kind of neighbours don’t you like?

I do not like those neighbours that do not respect the privacy of others. Such people have this uncanny knack for peeping into others’ lives for their vested interests.

I dislike them because such persons weaken the social fabric of society.

Q7.How can we make our neighbourhood a worth living place?

To make our neighbourhood worth living, we need to create a judicious combination of technology and nature. On the one hand, we must use technology to handle our conflicts adroitly. For example, we can use solar panels for street lighting.

On the other hand, we must strive hard to preserve nature. A good neighbourhood thrives primarily on facilities and the environment. And to keep our surroundings in good shape, we must follow the prudent approach of not disturbing the gifts of nature around us like trees, water bodies etc.

Being a social butterfly, I leave no stone unturned to spend quality time with my neighbours. Firstly, I have formed a WhatsApp group to keep all residents informed about each other.

Secondly, I have made a list of birthdays and other important dates, and on all occasions, I wish my neighbours.

Apart from this, in case of unforeseen contingency in my neighbourhood, I always provide unabated support to the sufferer.
