When and where did you lose it?

Last month I attended the wedding celebrations of one of my bosom friends. During that time, I had to participate in an urgent online meeting, and to do so; I went to the study room of my friend’s home.

After attending the meeting, I took a shower while leaving my laptop in the study room. To my further dismay, the computer was not there when I came back.

What did you do to find it?

To locate the laptop, I left no stone unturned. Firstly, I ran from pillar to post to search for every nook and corner of the house. To my dismay, I couldn’t find it.

After that, with the help of one of my friends, I tried to use tracking software to know the whereabouts, but my efforts went in vain.

And explain how you felt about it?

Being a digital nomad, I was upset because my work thrives primarily on the laptop. I had a boatload of data in the computer, which went for a toss.

Apart from this, the fear of the data getting into the wrong hands was also there. Moreover, the laptop was unique because my brother gifted it to me on my last birthday. Due to all these reasons, I was in absolute disarray.

However, I consoled myself and enjoyed the party.

Introduction

Losing things is not a big deal because irrespective of how much we take care of our belongings, we lose them due to umpteen reasons.

Although I take utmost care of my possessions, recently I lost one of my belongings with no fault of mine.

What did you lose?

I lost my bicycle

When and where did you lose it?

Last year on my birthday occasion, I went to the market to buy sweets. Instead of going through the car, I chose to go on my bicycle to burn some calories. To my dismay, after coming out of the shop, I didn’t see it in the parking.

What did you do to find it?

To find it, I ran from pillar to post. Firstly I contacted the nearby street vendors to locate the bicycle. To my dismay, I did not get any information from them.

Next, I went to the shop to check the CCTV footage. From the recording, it was crystal clear that a youngster stole the bicycle. As the face was not visible in the video, we couldn’t confirm the culprit’s identity.

Lastly, I contacted the police and complained. The concerned official took all details from me and assured me to take stringent action against the offender.

And explain how you felt about it?

Losing the bicycle left me in a state of disarray. It was close to my heart because my grandfather gifted it on my 18th birthday. Moreover, there are numerous pleasant moments with the bicycle, which are still etched in my memories. Lastly, it ruined my birthday, and I felt depressed.

Follow up Questions

Here are some follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “  Describe an occasion when you lost something”.

1. Why do some people lose things?

Some people do not plan. They behave like a ship without radar that is always at the mercy of wind for its direction. Due to this habit, they do not keep track of their possessions. Moreover, a few people incline toward entertainment, and when they are in an enjoyable mood, they pay less heed to their things and lose them.

2. What kinds of things do generally people lose?

People generally lose all kinds of things. They often do not track the things they’re not used to carrying. For example, in those places where it rains once in a blue moon, people take an umbrella on a rainy day, but when they place it somewhere, they tend to forget it and lose it.

Apart from this, people forget their wearable accessories like caps, scarves etc.

3. What can people do to find things they’ve lost?

The first and foremost thing people must do is recall where they’ve been. If they have lost their keys, it is better to look in places with a higher probability of leaving them. This strategy works like a charm for me, and I am pretty sure it will benefit others.

In my opinion, another strategy is to attach some contact details to our belongings. It helps us when we lose something and the person who finds it calls us by seeing our contact information.
