IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

Describe a uniform you wear (at your school or company) or you wore at school
You should say:

  • When did you wear it?
  • Who bought it for you?
  • What does it look like?
  • How did you feel about it?

Sample 1

I have worn the uniform many times. One was special when I was in school. I attended two schools in my life. The second one, which I started in my 11th standard, and that school’s uniform appealed to me. My dad bought it for me from a shop where there was a lot of rush because many children took admissions in that school, which looked different from all the school uniforms. The primary reason was to differentiate our school students from other schools.

The uniform was a white shirt with deep rust brown trousers.

So many schools were wearing brown trousers, but the deep rust brown was a unique colour those days, and I feel good about it because I have perfect memories attached to that uniform, and the colour combination was unique. It was excellent, and whenever I went to school, the people on public transport would compliment me for my good looks in that uniform.

Moreover, my school days were very good, and the excellent time spent there will remain etched in my memories, so I have perfect memories attached to the uniform.

Furthermore, my school buddies are very close to my heart, and I have a picture of all of them hung on my bedroom wall. So whenever I see it, I feel nostalgic. My school days would never return, so it’s essential for me. Very soon, the schoolmates will have a reunion, and we have planned to be in the same uniform to make that day a particular day.

Sample 2

When I joined my first company, there was a uniform, and I wore it every day. Initially, I paid for it when I joined the company. However, after that, the company would provide us with two sets of uniforms every year.

It was a white shirt with vertical blue stripes, blue trousers, and black formal shoes. It looked elegant on me, and through the uniform, the process was straightforward because I needed not to go through the tedious process of wearing a new set of uniforms and uniforms daily.

I felt good about it for three reasons. First, there was a substantial saving of time, and I did not go through the cumbersome process of selecting what to wear. The second was improved willpower because we know we have limited willpower every day, and it is high in the morning.

If we make more decisions, there will be a more significant decline in willpower. And thirdly, it also saves money because when you wear a new set of clothes every day, you must wear them according to the fashion.
And for that, you need to shell out money from your pocket. However, you only spend a little cash when you wear the same set daily.

The best reason for feeling good was that the same set of clothes every day could be dull; however, wearing unique clothes on holidays and Sundays made me feel awesome.

Sample 3

Well, uniform is the identity of every company and every school. It is essential for every student. I remember that when I was in 11th standard. At that time, I was admitted to a government school. And the uniform of the government school was very beautiful. The colour of that uniform was black, and the shirt’s colour was white.

And whenever I wore it, it looked perfect on my personality. And I purchased that uniform with my father from the shop. And whenever I wore it, society gave me respect. Every person asked my father which school your son goes to. So, some of my village students gained admission to that school.

And whenever we all wear that uniform, we click pictures together to show our uniform to another person. And sometimes whenever we went to any shop wearing that uniform. Then, shopkeepers also gave me respect, like your uniform is gorgeous. And I get more compliments from other individuals.

Moreover, whenever we entered school, when I wore a clean and perfect uniform, school teachers also gave me lots of positive comments. And it was my favourite uniform at my school. And that uniform, I like that. And if I get a chance, I would like to wear that again.

Sample 4

Wearing a uniform is an aspect by which we can identify a person. It also gives us an identity to recognize ourselves and our institution. And it could be our school or college.

So apart from that, it also demonstrates discipline. And there are a lot of uniforms I wore during my childhood and in my school. And during my college.

But here I would like to talk about a uniform close to my heart. And I was worried for the first time when I was in fifth standard. Actually, in my school, Swamiji Nanda, they followed traditions.

Like in the fifth grade, they separate students into separate badges, like we can say, clubs. There are a lot of clubs like the Nehru Club, Bhagat Singh Club, and the Subhash Chandra Bose Club. So, I was a part of the Bhagat Singh club.

And so they assigned a uniform to each club. So my uniform consisted of a red T-shirt and a white trouser. Apart from that, a specific kind of belt demonstrates our name.

And also we had to wear a cap with it. It’s more like a colourful uniform, giving us an identity. So anyone can recognize us we are from which club.

Apart from that, it also gave us some tasks to perform during the duties of the club. So I bought it from the store. It’s a school store.

And with the help of my teacher, I bought the same. And I feel very superior to all other members. And it also gives us superiority.

It’s kind of pride and valuable, as our principal told us because they have followed this tradition for the past 50 years. And like we are like we have to like to perform their duties.

If we wanted to succeed, they honored us with some expensive prizes. Then, they selected a captain from the clubs. For that reason, I wore a uniform during my school time.

Follow-ups

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “Describe a uniform you wear (at your school or company) or you wore at school”.

1. Why should students wear uniforms?

Students should wear uniforms for two reasons. First, when they wear uniforms, they save time because they need not wear different clothes daily. Apart from that, it also saves money because if you have too many clothes, if you have a different set of clothes every day, you need to buy more clothes. And lastly, wearing a uniform makes all students look the same, bridging the gap between low-income and affluent people.

2. On what occasions should people wear uniforms?

Uniforms are not for any occasion. In institutions where people need to work a lot for longer hours, wearing a uniform is prudent. In schools and factories, wearing uniforms is practised because it is easy to identify an employee or student as an outsider.

3. Should companies ask employees about the design of their uniforms?

Companies asking employees about the design of their uniforms is a prudent approach because employees are the end users, and whether the uniform is comfortable to them is significant, and that’s why it is a worthwhile proposition to ask their opinions. You can design the uniforms while taking views from a large sample of employees and based upon the feedback.

4. Can people tell someone’s personality by their clothes?

To some extent, they can tell because if a person is wearing shabby clothes, that means that person doesn’t keep himself as well, and he doesn’t care about his looks. On the contrary, if a person is wearing neat and clean clothes, that means that person takes care of his looks. However, in some cases, people can wear perfect clothes but exhibit a weak character, so there is very little correlation.

5. What color would catch people’s attention most?

Bright colors, whether red, yellow, or purple, attract people’s attention most. So, these colors attract people’s attention the most.
