Many people believe that individuals over 65 should not be allowed to continue working. Others think that people should be allowed to work for as long as they choose. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

A few people postulate that individuals with age above 65 must not be permitted to carry on working. Others opine that people must have the option to keep on working as long as they desire. As per my opinion retiring at the age of 65 is a prudent approach. However, this essay will discuss both views.
There is no denying this conviction that as we age, our physical and mental abilities decline significantly. Due to this reason for the senior citizens, it is not viable to carry on with their work after attaining the age of 65. Because there are higher chances of making errors, which could jeopardize the goodwill earned by them at their workplace. Apart from this the productivity of, a person in old age declines considerably, which could be a cause of concern for the organisation they work. For example, as per a recent study conducted by Oxford University, after attaining the age of 60, the average output of a person declines by 5 per cent every year.
However, many disagree and feel that individuals should have the freedom of working as long as they wish, and there should be no upper age limit. As per their doctrine, every person has a legitimate right to earn a livelihood, having an age limit at work would deny them this fundamental right. However, this argument is incorrect because if old people keep occupying their jobs, the younger generation would have fewer opportunities. Iceland is the prime example, where due to the retirement age of 67, the unemployment rate for youth is high.
In conclusion, while freedom to work after reaching 65 age allows the elderly population to remain financially secure. It is counterproductive for the younger generation resulting in fewer job options. Moreover, it would decline the output of the nation. Hence, the upper age limit of 65 for work is a worthwhile proposition.
