1. Why do you think studying history is essential in today’s world?
Studying history has always been important, and by studying history, we get to know what our ancestors were like, how we have evolved with time, and how much people have suffered and sacrificed to get us to this place where we are today so that we respect our resources and their sacrifices.
2. What historical period or event fascinates you the most and why?
The time of independence. India gained independence in 1947. So, around that time, the period from 1945 to 1948 was very inspiring because, besides all the tensions in the culture and religion, all the Indians got together and led to and won their independence by themselves.
3. How has studying history changed your perspective on current events or societal issues?
So many societal issues need urgent attention these days; people have understood the importance of freedom and tend to make things out of their minds.
But if they look at the scriptures or ancient or historical evidence, they will learn why the rules existed and why people followed this cultural belief or particular practice. These days, people need to understand the significance behind it.
4. In what ways does history repeat itself?
The most fascinating example could be fashion. Fashion in terms of clothes and accessories has evolved with time. But old fashion always comes back and becomes trendy. That is what I think.
5. What lessons can we learn from past mistakes?
We all grow up learning, and we learn from our mistakes. So we should if we experience doing, committing a mistake, learn from it to decrease the chances of committing the same error in the future and pass that lesson from one generation to the other and our peers.
6. How do historians interpret and analyze primary sources to reconstruct the past?
To reconstruct the past, they look for the patrons, and to look after the patrons, they go through whatever historical records they have, and based upon that, they make an analysis that helps them to reconstruct the past.
7. What impact does studying history have on national identity and cultural heritage?
Okay, people who study history, they know, they get to have an idea about the nation and how the rich, how rich the culture is.
By studying history, when people study well, they get to understand the current situation of the country and how it has evolved with time or how people have interpreted the learnings from the past, and that has become the core value for people to understand what the heritage is.
8. How have advancements in technology influenced the study and preservation of history?
So, technological advancements have played an enormous role in preserving historical things. For example, if I talk about archaeology, archaeologists study various monuments, ancient pristine temples, and other places.
They are looking at the structure they are making and finding ways to protect it. Another thing is that people are doing retrospective studies, which makes it possible because technology has advanced.
The first thing people have done is create a pool where all the historical data has been put, which has made it easier for people to conduct a retrospective study, and that is how technology has helped.
9. Can you describe a historical site or monument that left a lasting impression on you?
So I visited Odisha many years ago, and there is a monument named Konark Temple. So, the Konark Temple is famous for its architecture; the building is magnificent, and the details are very minute.
It has a wheel that shows time with the help of the shadow of the sun, and that is fascinating. So many years back, people had the idea and thought behind such magnificent architecture and monuments.
