IELTS 7TH NOV 2020 ACADEMIC TEST ESSAY TOPIC 2
Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving a car or motor-bike. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A few people opine that the possible course of action to upgrade safety on roads is to raise the minimum legal age required to drive a car and a two-wheeler. From my point of view, I fully agree, with this idea because firstly it would decline the traffic on roads and secondly it would give sufficient time to the youngsters to learn driving.
The foremost benefit of this approach is that it would lead to a tremendous decline in the overall traffic on the roads. With a rise in the driving age, then those individuals who fall below the permitted age would not be allowed to drive. Hence the overall traffic on the road will decline considerably, which ultimately would lead to fewer road accidents. For example, a survey conducted in India revealed that a 10% decline in traffic leads to a similar percentage decline in the number of road accidents.
Moreover, the rise in the minimum driving age would provide sufficient time for the youngsters to learn the basics of driving. Because in this contemporary era, most of the young people remain quite busy in their hectic schedule, due to this, they do not have enough time at their disposal to hone their driving skills. Hence, they can use this delay in getting permission to drive as a blessing by joining a driving school or by learning to drive under the aegis of a skilled driver.
To conclude` raising the minimum age required for driving is a prudent approach because it would not only lead to a sizeable reduction in traffic congestion but also offer extra time to the youngsters to develop their driving skills.
