IELTS ESSAY TOPIC

Some people believe that the government should take care of old people and provide financial support after they retire. Others say individuals should save during their working years to fund their own retirement. What is your opinion? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own experience.

A few people opine that the higher authorities ought to take care of the elderly population and offer financial benefits post-retirement.On the contrary, others postulate that older people need to save funds during their working years for retirement. I am in solidarity with the former view that it is the bounden duty of the government to help elderly people. However, this essay will discuss both views.

To begin with, providing funds to elderly people post-retirement is a prudent approach because they serve the nation during their prime through their job or business. Due to their determination, dedication and discipline, they help their country grow and contribute substantially in their working years towards taxes. Therefore when they grow old, it is the bounden duty of the governments to provide them with unabated support so that they can live their lives with dignity and help the current generation and posterity with the heaps of knowledge and experience they possess.

On the other side, some people believe that it is the duty of the people to save a considerable amount of money during their working years because when the government pays for their pension and other schemes, it affects the state’s exchequer negatively. However, this argument is incorrect because its implementation will lead to a self-centred society where the central focus of the inhabitants would be on earning money rather than helping others. Japan is the prime example which ranks higher in the happiness index due to the government’s policy of providing pensions post-retirement.

To conclude, although paying a pension to retired people negatively affects the government’s budget, keeping into account their contributions and the needs of society, it is worthwhile to pay them.
