In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Sample Answer
In this contemporary epoch, a rising number of individuals in a few nations are opting to live alone, as compared to the past. This essay believes that it is a negative development because firstly, it affects their mental fitness and secondly, it could lead to a self-centred society.
People who prefer to live alone could have more emotional problems as compared to those who spend their lives in the company of others. Because when we spend our time in the company of our near and dear ones, we feel more fresh and energetic. Furthermore, during our tough times, our close ones help us to handle the conflicts adroitly. Hence, we remain more emotionally secured when our acquaintances are nearby. For example, The Times recently reported that more than 60% of cases of bipolar depression are of those people who stay alone.
Apart from this, this practice of staying alone could be counter-productive for society. As we human beings require each other’s unabated support for survival, the culture of staying alone of some individuals could jeopardize the social fabric of our society. Therefore, the adoption of this practice could create such a world for posterity where there would be limited co-operation between the people. India is the prime example of this where social bonding is high in people staying in the countryside because of the practice of joint family system as compared to urban areas where people prefer to live either alone or in a nuclear family.
To conclude, the trend of staying alone is not at all a worthwhile proposition as it could lead to emotional breakdown for individuals coupled with the creation of an egoistic society.
