Sample 1

I travel a lot to public places because I love to go to libraries and parks whenever I have free time. Sometimes, I spend time at railway stations and bus stands because of the nature of my job.

So many times, I need to answer calls from people. However, on one occasion, I had to answer a phone call from someone I didn’t know. It happened at the railway station when I had to catch a train to New Delhi.

The call was from a company named Club Mahindra. The telemarketer who called me told me that their company has launched a campaign in which they are inviting a few couples to attend a presentation. In that presentation, they will showcase their products and features.

Those interested in buying those products and those who aren’t interested will be given two nights and three days of complimentary stay at a resort in Glam Mahindra.

So it was a good experience for me, and I said yes to that presentation because I was alone while waiting for my train, and the waiting period was difficult. Luckily, when I got the call, I conversed with the telemarketer for 10 minutes, and due to that, the waiting time was reduced. When I finished the call, I saw that the train was coming.

So it was a good experience because I first passed my time. Secondly, I got to interact with an exciting person because the telemarketer had a lot of knowledge regarding travel-related products. As a voracious traveller, I love interacting with people who know much about the travel industry.

Sample 2

Whenever we are in a public place, we follow a particular decorum so that our actions do not disturb the people around us. So that is the reason I only sometimes attend phone calls when I’m in a public place. Today, I want to talk about the scenario when I was at the radio station and I got a call.

I picked up the call because it was a new number. So, I thought it might be someone who wanted to contact me. So, the call was from a recruiter from a job consultancy. She said that because I posted my CV on various job portals like Naukri.com and Monster.com,

So, from there, she took my CV. She told me that, considering my experience and qualifications, she had a job for me. So I didn’t want to talk to her. But because I was a public person, I spoke to her because, at that time, I was badly looking for a job.

So I corresponded with her. I talked to her. I told her what I was looking for and what kind of salary package I was looking for. Moreover, she asked me various questions regarding my work experience, likes and dislikes, and whether I wanted to relocate to another location. So, I answered all her answers patiently.

And at the end of the conversation, she gave me a talk to our manager. So he took my telephone interview. So although I was in a public place, it would be a good thing to do.

So, whenever an opportunity is in front of you, you should grab it with both hands. So I attended that telephonic interview, and at the end of the conversation, the manager told me that I had cleared the first round and needed to come to the company for the actual round of interviews.

So I felt perfect about the experience because I did not have much to do when I was at the registration. At that time, I got an opportunity, and the best part was that 90% of the work was done telephonically.

So then, after two days, I went to the company and cleared the actual round of interviews, and I got a decent job. I’m working for that company, and the conversation I had that day at the public place will always remain etched in my memories because it brought a paradigm shift in my life.

Follow-ups

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “Describe a time when you answered a phone call from someone you didn’t know in a public place IELTS Cue Card”.

1. Should people be banned from talking loudly in public places?

Public places are where people come to relax or do important work; at those places, people should maintain decorum since that is a place for group activities. So instead of speaking loudly, people should talk sensitively because when they talk loudly, the others get disturbed, leading to more trouble.

So yes, people should not talk loudly in public, and there should be a blanket ban.

2. Is it acceptable to talk on the phone in public?

In this modern era, phones have become an integral part of our lives, and we primarily use them to handle our conflicts adroitly. So yes, talking on the phone in public should be acceptable because if such a facility is provided, people may retain business, and sometimes, people will face unforeseen contingencies.

So if they have a phone and can talk through it, it becomes easy for them.

3. Should parents teach their children to behave well in public?

Yes, it is the bounden duty of the parents to teach their children to behave well in public because when children behave well in front of others, it leads to a good environment inside the society, and good behaviour is contagious. It transfers from one person to another.

On the contrary, if children misbehave, the coming generation will follow the same, leading to a society where people do not respect each other.

4. Why do some people not care about their actions in public?

Some people have this mindset that they can do whatever they like.

So that’s why they do not care about their actions in public, and they believe that by doing different kinds of things that are not acceptable in society, they can grab the attention of others. So, that feeling of getting noticed by others prompts them to do things that are not good, and they give minor importance to these actions.

5. What are the differences between sitting next to someone who talks on the phone and sitting next to people who speak to each other while travelling by train?

Sitting close to a person talking on the phone makes you feel more bored because the conversation from only one side is visible.

However, if you are in the company of people talking to each other, that conversation is more interesting for you.

6. Do most people mind others talking on the phone in public places?

Many people find it uncomfortable when others speak on the phone in public places because public places are for people who come there for relaxation and sometimes for specific activities. When people talk on the phone, others get disturbed, which is not a good approach.
