How to calculate your CELPIP score?
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a test created to evaluate the English language proficiency of people aspiring for immigration or permanent residency in Canada and those applying for Canadian citizenship. The calculation of CELPIP scores is based on performance in four language skill measurements: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The scoring of each section takes place separately, and then the overall score is ascertained.
The prospective test seeker can follow the following procedure to calculate the CELPIP score:
1. Listening (47 points maximum):
- For each accurate answer to a question, the candidate gets 1 point in Part 1 and Part 2.
- For each precise answer to a question, the candidate gets 2 points in Part 3
- For Part 4, the candidate receives a score on a scale from 1 to 9.
2. Reading (47 points maximum):
- For each accurate answer to a question, the candidate gets 1 point in Part 1 and Part 2.
- For each accurate answer to a question, the candidate gets 2 points in Part 3
- For Part 4, the candidate receives a score on a scale from 1 to 9.
3. Writing (47 points maximum):
- Scoring for Part 1 (Writing an Email) and Part 2 (Responding to Survey Questions) is based on a scale from 1 to 5.
- Scoring for Part 3 (Writing an Essay) is based on a scale from 1 to 6.
4. Speaking (47 points maximum):
- Marks for Part 1 (Giving Advice) and Part 2 (Talking about a Personal Experience) are on a scale from 1 to 5.
- Marks for Part 3 (Describing a Scene) and Part 4 (Making Predictions) are on a scale from 1 to 6.
The individual section scores are added together to arrive at the overall CELPIP score. The total score varies from 0 to 300, and the CELPIP website delivers a conversion chart to select the equivalent Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level for immigration and citizenship objectives.
