IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Plastic bags, plastic bottles, and packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by the government and individuals to solve this problem?
SAMPLE ANSWER
The usage of plastic is harmful to the environment. Yet, over the decades, items made of plastic have become an essential part of our daily lives. This essay will discuss their adverse environmental effects and ways to tackle these issues.
The primary and severe issue of the usage of plastic items is pollution. Many prominent studies repeatedly pointed out that plastic things cause irreversible damage to living species, including animals, birds, and insects. These plastic items take many decades, even maybe centuries, to dissolve in the earth, which often leads to a pile of waste from these items. Much of this waste is untreated and leads to pollution, making that area unhabitable for humans. Humans’ actions threaten the survival of other species, as many unknowingly consume plastic, causing death or severe illness.
Governments have a huge role in curbing plastic usage by imposing stricter regulations around them. Many governments have even banned single-use plastic items, the primary driver of pollution. Apart from that, they should support companies that recycle plastic and manufacture plastic items alternatives in the form of subsidies and tax incentives. All of the government policies would only be successful with support from the public. Everyone should have a severe attitude towards pollution, not litter waste in public places. At our homes, we should make conscious efforts to reduce plastic use by adopting eco-friendly alternatives. Ill-effects of plastic usage should be taught to children that make them lead a plastic-free lifestyle.
It is time to act swiftly and collectively, both governments and individuals, to reduce plastic use and thereby protect our environment.
