IELTS ESSAY TOPIC

Some people believe governments should invest in preserving minority languages, while others feel, this is not a good use of resources. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model Answer

A section of the society believes that the government should spend funds to save the mother tongue, whereas the rest argue that investing in such things is unworthy. The essay will discuss both views, followed by my opinion.

To begin with, the foremost reason why some people believe that government should invest in saving the minority languages is that it connects people with their culture. Speaking native tongue aids us to be in touch with our tradition. Furthermore, it helps build the identity of a particular group at the global level. To illustrate, the Maharashtra government organizes various campaigns to raise awareness among people to promote their mother voice, and this is the prime reason why most of the Mumbai citizens can speak “Marathi”.

On the other hand, the supporters of the latter view argue that using higher authorities as the saviour of minority languages is not fruitful as there are very few speakers of such languages. Therefore, it will not be a good idea because the economy will be highly affected. Instead of it, it would be a lot better for the governments to invest in other sectors, such as education and healthcare, for the holistic development of the nation. For instance, a recent survey conducted by The Hindustan Times reported that there are more than 40 minority languages, and it is not possible for the authority to save them all.

To summarize, although saving local languages is crucial for conserving cultures, in my opinion spending money on such a cause will affect the economy of a country severely.
